Niagara University senior Giancarlo Iuorio stunned Connecticut with three goals to propel the Purple Eagles men’s hockey team to a 3-0 victory Friday night at Dwyer Arena.

Iuorio scored a goal in the opening minute of play and added another two quick goals in the second to give the Purple Eagles (3-2-2, 2-0-0 AHA) its second win in two games over AHA foes. It was Iuorio’s first hat trick of his career.

Junior Ryan Murphy added two assists while junior goalie Carsen Chubak recorded 34 saves for his second shutout of the season.

The Purple Eagles face the Huskies (0-3-1, 0-2-0) again at 7 p.m. tonight at Dwyer.

BASKETBALL: Canisius College opened the Jim Baron era with an impressive 77-54 victory over Ryerson in an exhibition contest at the Koessler Center.

Billy Baron, the coach’s son, made a big splash by pouring in 22 points on 6-of-10 shooting from three-point range and 7 of 15 overall. Baron, who transferred to Canisius after playing for his father last year at Rhode Island, added five assists.

Senior point guard Harold Washington added 10 points and five assists, while Jordan Heath and Freddy Asprilla added nine points each for the Golden Griffins.
