Buffalo Police Officer Derrick J. Carr, who works in the Ferry-Fillmore District, remains in critical condition in Erie County Medical Center with injuries suffered in an off-duty car accident two weeks ago on Memorial Drive by the old Central Terminal.

Carr, 50, either was distracted or lost control of the vehicle while on the circle portion of the drive and crashed into a tree, injuring himself and two out-of-town relatives who were passengers, according to Ferry-Fillmore Lt. Joseph Makowski.

“We expect him to return eventually to work. He’s healing, and it is just a matter of time before he heals and can begin therapy,” Makowski said. “Derrick is a respected, diligent officer, and his family is very appreciative of his co-workers’ support in visiting the hospital to see him.”

Carr, a 24-year veteran of the force, suffered extensive injuries to his lower body, including broken bones and joint dislocations, but was conscious when he was transported to ECMC.

The crash occurred at about 1 a.m. Oct. 20, and no charges were filed, police said.

Willie Tarver, 53, one of the passengers, was released last Thursday from ECMC, and Willie Allison, 52, the other passenger, was listed in fair condition Wednesday night. Allison is in a regular room at the hospital, and Carr is in the hospital’s trauma unit.
