Joseph C. Militello, of West Seneca, a retired discount department store manager and variety store owner, died Tuesday in Ridgeview Manor, Lackawanna, after a long battle with cancer. He was 75.

Born in Buffalo, he was a graduate of Bishop Fallon High School and worked for several years in his family’s construction business, Militello Builders.

Later, he worked for Twin Fair discount department stores. As a store manager, he was assigned to revive underperforming locations.

After Twin Fair closed in 1982, Mr. Militello opened a variety store, Delaware Variety, on Delaware Avenue near Allen Street, and operated it for 17 years.

Mr. Militello coached Little League baseball and was a tireless supporter of his sons and grandsons in their athletic pursuits.

A longtime New York Yankees and Buffalo Bills fan, he was known for his teasings and his jokes, and the pride he took in his yard.

Surviving are his wife of 54 years, the former Geraldine Anello; two sons, Joseph I. and Mark; and a brother, Paul. Another brother, Nicholas, died Oct. 22.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at 9:30 a.m. Friday in St. Gabriel Catholic Church, 5271 Clinton St., Elma.
