Jason Vieaux, who grew up in the Buffalo area, is now one of the kingpins of the world of the classical guitar. Yolanda Kondonassis is perhaps the most celebrated harp virtuoso.
The two are performing at 7:30 tonight at Lippes Hall in Slee Hall at the University at Buffalo North Campus, Amherst. They will play together and separately, with music all over the map.
The program features the world premiere of "Knock on Wood" for harp and guitar by Keith Fitch. Fitch is the head of the composition department at the Cleveland Institute of Music, where Vieaux heads the classical guitar department. Vieaux and Kondonassis are also playing the Fantasia for Harp and Guitar by the great Xavier Montsalvatge. Alan Hovhaness' delicate and lovely "Spirit of the Trees" and M.D. Pujol's "Suite Magica" help round out the exotic evening.
The Grammy-nominated Kondonassis is going solo for Salzedo's "Chanson dans la Nuit," and Vieaux takes his solo turn with Albéniz's evocative "Sevilla."
Admission is $20 at the door. For info, call 645-2921.
