Michael Cavanaugh starred on Broadway in “Movin’ Out,” the musical made up of songs by Billy Joel. Several years ago he joined the Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra in a successful tribute to Joel. Saturday, Cavanaugh returns, this time with a tribute to Elton John.
A veteran of piano bars, Cavanaugh paid his dues before he was spotted in Las Vegas by Joel, who hand-picked him for “Movin’ Out.” After moving to New York to work with Joel and Twyla Tharp, Cavanaugh toured with the show, perfecting the right kind of assertive, simple, pop-style piano that lends itself well not only to Joel’s songs but to John’s famous anthems. “Crocodile Rock,” “Candle in the Wind,” “Goodbye Yellow Brick Road” – Cavanaugh promises all kinds of John hits and since he has had the show on the road since 2010, he should have it down to a science.
The show takes place at 8 p.m. Saturday in Kleinhans. Admission is $32-$77. For info, call 885-5000.
