A high-speed chase that started in Lackawanna ended at a busy intersection in downtown Buffalo at about 3:30 p.m. today with a swarm of Buffalo police officers capturing the man after he abandoned the SUV he was driving, authorities said.

For several tense moments, city police were on high alert as the white Cadillac Escalade roared down Route 5 onto Ohio Street from Lackawanna and then through a maze of downtown streets, police said. Alerts were broadcast over the police radio to warn city officers out on patrol.

The driver of the fleeing vehicle initially had crashed into a Lackawanna police car, prompting the chase, which ultimately ended with the driver heading the wrong way on Pearl Street by the Main Place Mall.

The driver abandoned his SUV at Main and Court streets where he attempted to blend into the crowds by talking on a phone.

But police surveillance camera operators quickly alerted officers with a description of him and that led to his arrest.

His identity has not been released and charges have not yet been filed.

He was being processed by Lackawanna police and his vehicle was impounded.

Buffalo officers from South and Central districts along with Buffalo police accident investigators and K-9 officers all assisted in making the arrest.
