Singer-actress Vanessa Williams and her mother, Helen, are scheduled to return to Fredonia State College Nov. 10 to promote a book they co-authored.
The mother-daughter autobiography “You Have No Idea” details their relationship and how it aided Vanessa Williams through a series of challenges that arose after she became the first African-American to be crowned Miss America in 1983. It also includes Helen Williams’ reflections on attending Fredonia State College, where the Buffalo native began her studies at age 16 as a music education major, including how she met her late husband, Milton, a fellow student.
Helen Williams, who graduated from Fredonia in 1960, was honored with the college’s first Jessie Hillman Award for Excellence in 2010. Joining her at the ceremony were her children, Vanessa and Chris, an actor and comedian.
A presentation by Vanessa and Helen Williams is scheduled for 2 p.m. Nov. 10 in Diers Recital Hall on the Fredonia State campus. A book-signing will follow.
