An unidentified man in his 50s was rescued Tuesday afternoon by volunteer firefighters after falling 10 feet from a tree in a wooded area off the 7300 block of Kinne Road in the Town of Lockport, near the Royalton town line.
The man had not been hunting and was not in a tree stand, but had climbed the tree to sit on a branch, said Niagara County Sheriff Department Capt. Greg Schuey.
“We are not sure why he went up there, but we can only assume he was looking for good spots to hunt," Schuey said shortly after the rescue this afternoon.
Rescuers got the call just after 2:15 p.m. and then traveled nearly 800 feet off the road and across a knee-deep stream to reach the man.
The man was found conscious at the scene and was put on a backboard and taken by Rural Metro Medical Services ambulance to Erie County Medical Center.
Schuey said it appeared that the injured man suffered an ankle injury in the fall.
