Genesee County law enforcement officials continue to investigate the fatal crash Sunday afternoon in the Town of Darien that took the life of a South Buffalo native and sent her husband and daughter to Erie County Medical Center with serious injuries.
The family was driving to Buffalo to visit family members when the crash occurred.
Audrey Gleason, 55, of Baldwinsville, worked for the last three years in the Baldwinsville school district as a special education jobs coach and bus driver, The Post-Standard in Syracuse reported. She was pronounced dead at ECMC shortly after the 3 p.m. crash, in which a sedan driven by Gerald Kania, 47, of Lancaster, swerved into oncoming traffic on Route 20 and struck the Gleason’s sport utility vehicle head-on. The Genesee County Sheriff’s Office is investigating and Kania, who suffered a minor injury, so far has been charged with failure to keep right and may face further charges, deputies said. He told deputies he was distracted right before the crash.
Dennis Gleason, 57, was driving the SUV when the crash occurred. He was in stable condition Monday night in ECMC with vertebrate fractures.
The couple’s daughter, Kelly, 16 and a junior at Baldwinsville High School, remained in critical condition with two broken legs and a perforated bowel.
Vigils were conducted for the Gleason family Monday afternoon at Baldwinsville High School and Monday night at Holy Family Catholic Church in nearby Fairmount, The Post-Standard reported.
