PORT COLBORNE, Ont. – Two workers suffered minor injuries during a two-story fire Thursday afternoon at the Vale nickel plant, authorities said.
Port Colborne Fire and Emergency Services responded to a call about 2:45 p.m. of a structure fire a possible explosion. Sulphur fumes were among those the spilled out of the two stories and a conveyor belt on the southeast side of the building, officials said.
The injured workers were taken to a Welland hospital and other workers were examined at the building. A strong sulphur smell hung in the air around the plant for a time but a fast-moving storm cleared the air.
The building where the fire occurred is used for research purposes mainly on precious metals recovery.
The cause of the fire is under investigation by the Ontario Fire Marshal’s Office.
