LOCKPORT – A Lockport man arrested Tuesday on a trespassing charge tried to injure himself by wrapping a seat belt in the patrol car around his neck several times, Niagara County sheriff’s deputies reported.
Deputies said they were able to rescue Todd D. Delavalle, 23, of Dysinger Road, before he was seriously injured.
Delavalle was arrested about 4:30 a.m. Tuesday and charged with trespassing after he returned to a Dysinger Road apartment following a burglary investigation. He became angry and out of control in the back seat of the patrol car after his arrest, deputies said.
Although his hands were locked behind his back, he was able to slide the handcuffs to the front of his body and wrap the passenger side seat belt around his neck two or three times, according to a sheriff’s report. A deputy was able to stop on the shoulder of the Lockport Bypass and used a knife to cut Delavalle out of the belt before Delavalle stopped breathing or lost consciousness, according to the report.
Delavalle was taken to Niagara Falls Memorial Medical Center for an evaluation.
