A 20-year-old Derby man critically injured two weeks ago in a Town of Eden crash died in Erie County Medical Center early today, authorities reported.
Brett Farrell, who had been on a ventilator since the crash, died at about 2:40 a.m.
The crash occurred shortly after 1 p.m. Oct. 2, on Route 20. Investigators said the other driver, James Kipfer, 60, of Cowlesville, was operating a tractor-trailer that ran a red light at Route 20 and South Creek Road and struck Farrell’s car.
Charges are pending against Kipfer, and Eden police are working with the Erie County District Attorney’s Office, police Chief Michael Felschow said.
Investigators believe inattention by the truck driver led to the crash. But he was not believed to be speeding, and alcohol and drugs were not involved, according to police.
“The young man never had a chance,” Felschow said. “When he saw the truck, it was too late.”
Farrell was freed from his vehicle by members of the Eden Fire Department and Emergency Squad and airlifted to ECMC, where he remained in the Trauma Intensive Care Unit until his death.
