About 32 gravestones have been toppled in one of two recent acts of vandalism at a rural cemetery in the Town of Kendall, Orleans County sheriff’s officials said Tuesday.
On Sunday, sheriff’s deputies were called back to Beechwood Cemetery, off Woodchuck Alley, after the cemetery caretaker discovered the toppled gravestones, some of them broken in pieces. Many of those monuments marked the graves of people who died in the previous two centuries, officials said.
The earlier incident was discovered last Friday, when Sheriff’s Lt. R.E. Perry was checking the cemetery and found damage to what was once a chapel there.
Sheriff’s officials are asking anyone with information about the incidents to call them at (585) 589-5527.
