University at Buffalo School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences Institute for Healthcare Informatics appointed Dr. Peter Winkelstein executive director. Winkelstein is professor of pediatrics at the university, chief medical informatics office for UBMD and former chief of the division of general pediatrics. Winkelstein earned his M.D., MBA and served as chief resident in pediatrics at UB. He also co-founded UB’s Advanced Certificate in Medical/Health Informatics program.
The University at Buffalo School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences appointed James D. Bangs the Grant T. Fisher professor and chair of the Department of Microbiology and Immunology. Bangs previously was professor of medical microbiology and immunology at the University of Wisconsin-Madison Medical School. He is an expert in the cell biology of the agent that causes African sleeping sickness. Bangs received his undergraduate degree from Bates College, his Ph.D. from Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, and completed postdoctoral training in cell biology at Yale University School of Medicine and in microbiology at Stanford University School of Medicine.
The law firm Webster Szanyi named Sarah E. Tollner a partner with the firm. Tollner holds a bachelor’s degree from the University at Buffalo, a master’s degree from Canisius College, and earned her J.D. from UB School of Law. She was previously a partner in the law firm of Saeli & Tollner, and most recently served as in-house counsel for HealthNow New York.
Fox Run appointed Michelle Murtha-Kraus health center administrator. Murtha-Kraus previously was the administrator of the GreenFields Health and Rehab Center for the Niagara Lutheran Health System. Murtha-Kraus received her master’s degree at D’Youville College School of Nursing.
BlueCross BlueShield of Western New York appointed Tom Sass general manager, state products. Sass is a product management executive with 15-plus years of experience developing and owning long-term programs and initiatives. He previously served as director of marketing for the energy services group of GP Strategies Corp. Sass received his bachelor’s and master’s degrees from University at Buffalo.
Western Division Federal Credit Union appointed Katherine Kaus a lending manager. Kaus previously served as chief lending officer at Lake Shore Savings Bank. She has more than 26 years of industry experience.
The law firm Phillips Lytle appointed Geanne M. Blazkow and Randolf V. Clower associates in its Buffalo office. Blazkow earned her J.D. at the University at Buffalo School of Law and bachelor’s degree from Georgian Court University. Clower was an associate at Foley and Lardner and LeClair Ryan. Clower earned his J.D. at UB School of Law and a Ph.D. at the UB School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences. He is a Fredonia State College graduate.
All State Fire Equipment of Western New York named Jonny Smith division manager of the fire and security division. Smith, an Alfred State College graduate, was service manager at Simplex Grinnel. The company also named Kurt Juliano vice president of sales and promoted Nathan Tress to systems engineer. Juliano was business development manager at the company. Tress was senior service suppression technician. In addition, the company appointed Bob Lutz senior service technician fire alarm/security. Lutz formerly worked at Sonitrol/Dictograph, Guardian Protections Services, Davis Ulmer and Simplex Grinnell. He holds a New York State Fire Alarm license and has certifications in Micro Computer Technology and Cisco Networks.
