New Buffalo Productions, a new local theater company, is presenting a short run of Jason Robert Brown's musical "The Last Five Years" on the stage of the Alleyway Theatre (1 Curtain Up Alley) through Sunday. The show, which opened Thursday, stars New Buffalo Productions founders Leah Schneider and Christopher Wietig as two star-crossed lovers acting out a bittersweet five-year love affair.

As part of the musical's short run, Wietig and Schneider have invited Brown to town to give a workshop for musical theater actors at 10 a.m. Saturday in Amherst High School (4301 Main St., Amherst). The public may attend the workshop for free.

The musical, last seen locally at MusicalFare Theatre in 2006, has a nontraditional structure: While the story of Wietig's character unfolds in chronological order, we see Schneider's character's story play out in reverse. The tales briefly converge in the middle, but the musical and the structure itself speaks to the poignant journey of its two characters toward and away from one another.

Tickets to the show are $25. Call 310-7235 or visit www.newbuffaloproductions.com.
