Shirley V. Steiger, of Kenmore, a retired teacher in the Buffalo Public Schools, died Monday in Beechwood Continuing Care facility, Getzville. She was 89.
Born Shirley VanDewark in Frewsburg, she attended Frewsburg High School, where she was valedictorian of her 1939 graduating class. She graduated from the University of Buffalo with a bachelor of science degree in 1943.
Mrs. Steiger earned her master of science degree from Buffalo State College in 1972. Before she married and began raising a family, she taught history and social studies in Attica and Gowanda.
When she resumed her teaching career, she spent 20 years teaching at School 4 at South Park Avenue and Louisiana Street before her retirement in 1990.
Mrs. Steiger volunteered in the libraries at both Women & Children’s and Sisters hospitals. She was a member of Chi Omega Epsilon sorority for more than 50 years and was a life member of the UB Alumni Association.
She is survived by her husband of 66 years, Bradley D., and two daughters, Lissa VanDewark and Lauren Hess.
A service will be at 4 p.m. today in Central Park United Methodist Church, 216 Beard Ave.
