John P. Wukovits, who helped establish the Buffalo & Erie County Naval and Military Park, died Sept. 28 in Tucson, Ariz., where he had been a resident for the past 15 years. He was 88.
Born in Buffalo, he enlisted in the Marine Corps in 1942 and served with Marine Wing Service Squadron Nine in the Central Pacific. He was wounded in the Battle of Eniwetok and was awarded the Purple Heart.
Mr. Wukovits worked many years for Buffalo Civic Auto Ramps in downtown Buffalo.
He served as assistant executive director of the Naval Park and lived in the captain’s quarters aboard the USS Little Rock.
An avid baseball fan, he enjoyed feeding animals, watching old movies and playing cards and pool.
Surviving are his wife, Doris; two daughters, Julie Morrow and Joann Wilks; and a brother, Frank.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at 9 a.m. Saturday in St. Gregory the Great Catholic Church, 200 St. Gregory Court, Amherst.
