LEWISTON – Sister Robertine Saunders, a longtime teacher and librarian, died Monday at Stella Niagara. She was 99.

Born Eleanor Sanders in New Lexington, Ohio, she was a graduate of St. Aloysius Academy in New Lexington. She entered the Sisters of St. Francis at Stella Niagara and in 1933 made her profession of vows and began her teaching career at St. Elisabeth School in Charleston, W.Va.

Sister Robertine earned a bachelor’s degree in education at St. Mary of the Springs in Columbus, Ohio, and a master’s degree in library science from Villanova University.

She taught in Buffalo Diocese parish schools, including St. Benedict, St. Joachim, St. Ann, St. Michael, Sacred Heart Academy and Bishop McMahon. She also taught at Holy Rosary, St. Leo, St. John and Sacred Heart. She served as a librarian at DeSales High School in Columbus, Ohio.

In 1981, she retired to volunteer ministries in Columbus. In 2000, Sister Robertine returned to Stella Niagara, where she lived in the Health Center for the Retired Sisters.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at 9:30 a.m. Friday in the Sisters Chapel at Stella Niagara, 4411 Lower River Road.
