A commercial building on Jefferson Avenue was heavily damaged by fire shortly before midnight Tuesday.
Firefighters from Engine 21, just two blocks away, were called to 1132 Jefferson at 11:42 p.m. where the 100-foot-by-200-foot building became engulfed in flames. Conditions forced firemen to evacuate the building and fight the fire with a ladder tower, officials said.
The second floor of the structure was filled with tires.
Damage was estimated at $140,000. There were no injuries.
The cause remains under investigation.
Early this morning, a vacant house at 88 Reed St., also on the East Side, was heavily damaged by fire.
The house next door at 86 Reed also was damaged. The Red Cross is assisting two adults and two children who lived in that home.
