Buffalo State College will receive $99,759 from the federal Environmental Protection Agency’s Great Lakes Restoration Initiative to study the invasive potential of the Ponto-Caspian goby, a nuisance fish from eastern Europe which travels in the ballast of ocean freighters, federal lawmakers announced last week.

Buffalo State also will assess Great Lakes ports to determine where the fish stand the biggest chance of becoming established and which seasons they are most likely to spread. The data will be used to assist in surveillance and early detection efforts against the fish.
