BlueCross and BlueShield Association, the trade group and licensing organization for “Blues” plans nationwide, has honored BlueCross BlueShield of Western New York as a “Best of Blue” for its “innovative application of data.”
The national organization, which administers the Blues brand, gave the subsidiary of Buffalo-based HealthNow New York its 2012 Spirit Award for using the Blue Health Intelligence information database to service local, regional and national customers. The latest Best of Blue awards honored initiatives by Blues plans from 2011.
The Blue Health Intelligence database includes a collection of medical claims information from all 38 BCBS health plans across the country, making it the largest global health data resource, the company said.
The company said it used the account reporting system to analyze benefit designs and target drivers of health care costs and utilization, as it sought to better understand the information.
“Customers often ask for a deeper analysis when they view trends and reports, and our analytic team is able to use BHI’s solutions to provide detailed analysis,” Karen Blount, vice president of health care services at BlueCross BlueShield of Western New York, said in a statement. “BHI solutions have improved our groups’ confidence in making account decisions and further solidified their relationship with our company.”
