Trees to hug
We love trees in the spring for the blossoms and in summer for their shade, but the time of year that they get everyone talking is autumn. To mark the beauty of fall foliage time, the Arbor Day Foundation is giving 10 “autumn classics trees” to anyone who joins the nonprofit group this month. The free trees are part of its Trees for America campaign, to promote environmental stewardship.
Included are trees known for their autumn displays: Two sugar maples, two red maples and one each of scarlet oak, sweetgum, northern red oak, silver maple, white flowering dogwood and Washington hawthorn.
The trees – 6- to 12-inch seedlings – will arrive at the right time for planting, between Nov. 1 and Dec. 10, and are guaranteed to grow or they will be replaced. (All trees come with planting instructions.)
To become a foundation member and receive your trees, send $10 to Autumn Classics Trees, Arbor Day Foundation, 100 Arbor Ave., Nebraska City, NE 68410, by Oct. 31 or join online at arborday.org/october.
