A Lancaster volunteer firefighter was honored today as Fire Safety Educator of the Year by the Firemen’s Association of the State of New York.
William C. “Billy” Schroeder was presented with the award, which recognizes outstanding efforts in fire prevention and safety instruction, in a ceremony in Lancaster village fire headquarters.
Schroeder, who works for the Lancaster Central School District and serves on the Village Board, has been a firefighter since 1978 and served as Lancaster fire chief from 1994 to 1996.
He helped establish the annual Lancaster Fire Prevention and Life Safety Family Day and has assisted in fire safety events throughout Western New York. In 2001, he won the state Association of Fire Chiefs’ Fire Prevention Award.
