BPO Nation has a big week planned for Kleinhans.
Things kick off tonight with the reunion of Ben Folds Five at the music hall, beginning at 7 p.m. Pianist/songwriter/vocalist Folds has played the venue in the past – his solo set, backed by the Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra, was a highlight of the 2009 concert season.
But now that he has reunited with bandmates Robert Sledge and Darren Jessee, and released the vibrant "The Sound of the Life of the Mind" album, Folds is in full-on band mode.
That's right where many fans believe he belongs.
On Tuesday, Fiona Apple will make an extremely rare area appearance, as her "The Idler Wheel" tour stops by Kleinhans at 7 p.m.
Though the talented singer/pianist/songwriter has become tabloid fodder following a Sept. 19 arrest for marijuana possession in Texas – and a more recent on-stage discussion of her struggles with eating disorders over the years – all we really need to know about Apple is that she is an artist with a distinct musical vision and an irreverent spirit. Her album releases – there have only been four over the past 16 years – are noteworthy events, her live performances even more so. Even a cursory listen to "The Idler Wheel" tells you more about Apple than an entire tabloid of rants.
Tickets for both the Ben Folds Five and Fiona Apple shows are available through tickets.bpo.org. Seats for Ben Folds Five are $38 to $50; Apple's tickets go for $40 to $50.
