George H. Auffinger III, a retired insurance agent, died Sunday in Millard Fillmore Suburban Hospital, Amherst, after a short illness. He was 85.
A Buffalo native, Mr. Auffinger graduated from Nichols School in 1945 and Colgate University in 1950. He was a member of Beta Theta Pi fraternity.
He served in the Navy from 1945 to 1952 aboard a destroyer in the Pacific.
Mr. Auffinger was an insurance agent for New England Life Insurance Co. for about 40 years, retiring in the mid-1990s.
A lifelong fan of the Buffalo Bills, he also loved to ski and was a member of the Ski Patrol at Kissing Bridge for more than 20 years.
He enjoyed his two race horses, Fenwick and Attawapiskat; his dog, Heidi; Off-Track Betting; and summers at Sugarloaf Farm in Port Colborne, Ont.
Surviving are two sons, Judge and David; two daughters, Nancy and Susan Ramos; and his former wife, Frances Wood Auffinger.
A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Friday in St. Paul's Episcopal Church, 4275 Harris Hill Road, Clarence.
