Sister Mary Brigid Hartigan, who taught in Catholic elementary schools for more than 60 years, died Sunday in Mercy Health Care Unit in Buffalo. She was 86.
Born Mary Anne Hartigan in Lackawanna, she attended St. Thomas Aquinas School and Mount Mercy Academy.
She joined the Sisters of Mercy in 1944 and professed perpetual vows in 1950.
Sister Mary Brigid earned a bachelor’s degree in education from Canisius College and pursued graduate studies in remedial and diagnostic reading at the University of Scranton.
In addition to teaching in elementary schools, she taught reading in the Mercy Speech Center and was a reading consultant in many elementary schools in the Catholic Diocese of Buffalo.
More recently, she served as a switchboard operator and receptionist at Trocaire College.
Survivors include a sister, Regina Kelly.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated by the Rev. John Kelly, Sister Mary Brigid’s nephew, at 4:30 p.m. today in Mercy Center Chapel, 625 Abbott Road.
