BATAVIA – The Genesee County Sheriff’s Office warns that scam artists masquerading as Microsoft employees have been calling county residents in efforts to steal personal information.
Residents in Niagara and Genesee counties have called deputies to complain they have received calls from someone purporting to work with the computer giant to alert them to either a problem with their personal computers or a serious virus about to infect and damage the computer unless immediately handled.
The alleged Microsoft worker offers to guide the computer owner through a series of steps that ultimately give the caller remote access to that specific computer or computer system. None of the attempts succeeded because skeptical computer owners hung up before giving the caller account numbers or password and file information.
Sheriff’s officials advised any computer owner getting such a call should contact their closest law enforcement agency for advice before agreeing to any such offers of help.
