BARKER - The Barker Free Library is introducing the community to its first-ever website - and raising awareness of its many offerings - by conducting a contest for a new online slogan.
Residents have two choices - "Opportunity within reach" and "Where the story never ends" - for the library's new online home at www.BarkerFreeLibrary.com.
The deadline for casting ballots is Oct. 15. Children at Pratt Elementary School in Barker took home ballots earlier this week in an effort to further bolster what library and school officials already call a terrific relationship.
"We do everything we can to support the Barker Free Library and they support us in all of our reading initiatives," said Debbie Dearborn, a public relations and technology representative for Barker Schools. "We have a great public library here that really tries to keep our kids interested in reading. Our kids take field trips to the library and the library encourages kids to visit to use its resources. They're awesome."
The Barker Free Library has grown a great deal since its humble beginnings in 1938.
"We have books, periodicals, large-print, computers, Wi-Fi, music, story time for toddlers, young adult programs every couple of months - the whole nine yards," said Library Director Lisa Thompson. "We're really trying to reach everybody."
Thompson said the idea for the website and its two slogan choices came from brainstorming sessions with the library's Board of Directors.
"This is a whole new thing for us and the website just went up a few days ago," Thompson said. "I'm very excited about it and happy with it. It looks great and it will bring awareness to people that the library is here and we have so much to offer. I feel we are not utilized as much as we could be, even though we have people using the computers every day, not only for social networking, but to look for a job, for example.
"The main purpose of the website - and the contest - is to raise awareness," Thompson said. "We want to be current."
The special ballot is available at the library, at several Barker businesses, and on the website. After the final votes have been tallied, the new slogan will be unveiled at a special celebration at 11 a.m. on Oct. 27 at the library, 8706 Main St. Refreshments will be served and a special gift will be distributed to help patrons remember the new slogan, Thompson said.
