BROCKPORT - The boyfriend of a Brockport State College student found dead in her dorm room early Saturday was arrested about an hour later at a Thruway rest stop, authorities said.
The suspect was identified as Clayton Whittemore, 21, of New Hartford, which is near Utica. College officials said he was not a student at Brockport.
University police found the victim, whose name has not been released, about 3 a.m. in her dorm room at McLean Hall after her mother called the college because she was worried about her daughter.
At about 4 a.m., Whittemore was located at a Thruway rest area and taken into custody.
College authorities alerted students and faculty about the death but did not put the campus on lockdown.
"At this point, there is no reason to believe that any other members of the campus community are endangered in any way," a statement from college officials said.
The Monroe County Sheriff's Office was handling the investigation.
A temporary hotline was set up for parents with questions and concerns: (585) 734-3925.
Grief counselors were on campus for students Saturday and were expected to remain available throughout the weekend, said college spokesman John Follaco.
