ECC football hangs on
Jacob Kutz blocked an extra point and that proved to be the difference for Erie Community College as the Kats earned a 7-6 win over Hudson Valley in a Northeast Football Conference matchup at Veterans Memorial Stadium in Troy.
The Kats took a 7-0 lead on their second possession of the game when Will Robinson hit Marcus Carter for a 44-yard touchdown pass. An interception by Kyril Threats (Canisius) set up the score.
Hudson Valley got on the board with 45 seconds left in the half on a 34-yard pass play from Jalen Holmes to Dee Wilkins. Kutz then blocked the extra point.
Kutz finished with 10 tackles, including three for loss and a sack. Devin Coney led the Kats (2-3) with 13 tackles.
ECC hosts Lackawanda on Saturday.
Canisius women's volleyball sweeps
Canisius won its sixth straight match with a three-game sweep over Saint Peter's, 25-15, 25-17, 25-10. The Golden Griffins remained undefeated in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (5-0) and improved to 8-7 overall. Samantha Good had 11 kills and Allyson Severyn 18 digs.
Meanwhile, Niagara lost to Manhattan in four games, 15-25, 25-18, 22-25, 17-25. Kari Honomichl had 11 kills and 11 digs for the Purple Eagles (6-9, 3-2 MAAC).
Erie Community College improved to 15-6 with wins over Tompkins-Cortland, Broome and Corning in Region III pod play. Katie Russi (Frontier) had 32 kills on the day while Rylie Bean (Frontier) had 28 digs.
Medaille nabs soccer win
Medaille earned a 4-1 win over Franciscan. Dhillon Kevin gave the Mavericks a 1-0 first-half lead. Second half tallies by George Tor, Alex Pollak and John Smith secured the 10th win of the season for Medaille (10-1).
