Big Night, the monthly arts mixer launched by Just Buffalo Literary Center's former artistic director Michael Kelleher with poet Aaron Lowinger in 2007, is returning for the fall season. At 8 p.m. Saturday, the Western New York Book Arts Center (468 Washington St.) will host poets Filip Marinovich and Nava Fader along with Buffalo band the Cellars. Chef and poet Geoffrey Gatza will provide a buffet of gourmet food. All for a cool $5.
Big Nights are happily communal affairs, designed primarily to broaden the appeal of poetry beyond its small constituency, but also meant to encourage conversation and collaboration across the entire cultural spectrum.
Marinovich, a New York City-based poet and playwright, has two collections of poetry from Ugly Duckling Presse and has written three plays for his own theater company, Comet Party. Fader, who holds a master's in poetics from the University at Buffalo, wrote "All the Jawing Jackdaw" on Gatza's BlazeVox press. The Cellars, according to a release, mix "driving rock and psychedelic sounds like a child might mix together house paint." Visit www.justbuffalo.org or call 832-5400.
