Irene J. Youakim, of the City of Tonawanda, a retired beauty shop owner whose lineage can be traced to two kings, died Monday in Schofield Residence, Kenmore. She was 87.
Born Irene Moodie in Manitoba, Canada, she had 10 siblings.
The Moodie family's lineage can be traced to Robert Bruce, king of Scotland, and Edward VII, king of England. Mrs. Youakim's great-great- grandmother was Susanna Strickland Moodie, a noted Canadian author.
She met her future husband, Michael J., while he was stationed in northern Canada with the U.S. Army. They were married in 1944 in Buffalo, where they lived before moving to Tonawanda in 1959.
Through the years, they lived at two different addresses in Tonawanda. Mrs. Youakim operated "Irene's Beauty Salon" at each, spanning nearly 40 years. She retired approximately 25 years ago.
Her husband died in 2000.
Survivors include: a daughter, Louise Brandt; two sons, George and Phillip; a brother, Thomas Moodie; and a sister, Mela Romanko.
Services will be at 10 a.m. today in Lombardo Funeral Home, 885 Niagara Falls Blvd., Town of Tonawanda.
