NIAGARA FALLS - The community will come together at 2 p.m. Saturday at Niagara Active Hose Fire Hall, 6010 Lockport Road, Town of Niagara, to benefit a 16-year-old Niagara Falls High School student.
Danni Pierini, daughter of Dan and Lisa Pierini, is currently undergoing an intensive regimen of chemotherapy at Roswell Park Cancer Institute, after which she will undergo surgery to replace a large portion of her left femur. That will be followed by another 16 weeks of chemotherapy.
A clarinetist for the Wolverines high school marching band and a volunteer for several community organizations, Danni has been trying to keep her life as normal as possible while undergoing treatment, even making it into school for the start of the new year.
It was at school that her ordeal began last February. Danni was climbing the stairs to a class when her femur suddenly snapped, sending her to emergency surgery to insert pins into the damaged bone. While checking the progress of the injury in June, doctors discovered a cyst within the femur, which was later determined to be osteosarcoma. She has been in treatment at Roswell Park since.
