The Buffalo Municipal Housing Authority is working to enhance its relationship with Section 3 businesses and individuals.
During Thursday's regular business meeting, the board of commissioners formed a not-for-profit board to focus on business development, especially for Section 3 businesses.
The authority also added three new companies to its list of certified Section 3 businesses that can take advantage of its contracts and projects.
The purpose of the board is to provide Section 3 companies with support and services such as legal, accounting and marketing, said Dawn E. Sanders, authority executive director.
"Some people have an idea for a business or a skill and want to put it into a business that works," Sanders said.
Commissioner Ronald Brown noted Section 3 businesses fall under at least one of the following definitions:
. 51 percent of the business is owned by any resident with an income that is 30 percent lower than the medium income, whether public housing residents or not. And according to the Department of Housing and Urban Development, a Section 3 resident is one who lives in an area where HUD-assisted projects for housing or community development are located.
. 30 percent of the full-time workforce is represented by Section 3 residents.
. 25 percent of a joint venture goes to a Section 3 business or company.
