Chautauqua County law enforcement revealed Thursday there is a nationwide manhunt on for a Virginia man they believe fatally shot Clymer School Superintendent Keith L. Reed.
Law enforcement authorities identified the suspect as Anthony Robert Taglianetti II, 42, of Woodbridge, Va., at a packed news conference in the county's emergency services office in Mayville.
He was described as six foot tall and weighing 250 pounds. Police believe he is unemployed.
"We consider him armed and dangerous," Sheriff Joseph A. Gerace said at the news conference.
Both Gerace and District Attorney David Foley refused to comment on the motive of the killing, but they ruled out the possibility that it had anything to do with Reed's work.
They also said it was not a random act.
"This isn't a random act of violence," Gerace said. "This individual wanted to do harm to Mr. Reed." Foley added: "We believe it was isolated and oriented toward Mr. Reed."
The shocking homicide has brought national attention to the quiet, rural town just north of the Pennsylvania border.
Reed's body was found Monday outside his house on his property in Clymer. Gerace said he had been shot multiple times.
Family members and friends had reported him missing Sunday. He was last seen alive sometime Friday evening.
Reed, a divorced father of three, had served as the small school district's superintendent since last year. Before that he served as a high school principal in Sherburne.
Reed also had a fiancee.
Gerace said Thursday that police have evidence that Taglianetti was in Clymer Friday night and that they believe he is back in Virginia.
"We have a team going there," Gerace said."We put out a national bulletin."
