The Canisius College men's lacrosse team will welcome some of the world's top players to the Demske Sports Complex when the Griffs host Dirty Lax in an exhibition contest on Saturday at 4 p.m.
The Dirty Lax team features 17 NLL and MLL players, including seven 2012 all-stars from the two leagues. In addition, four former Canisius standouts are listed on the roster, highlighted by NLL Rookie of the Year Adam Jones '11. Dan Coates '11, Kevin Ross '07 and Simon Giourmetakis '12 are also featured on the team.
In addition to Jones, the six remaining all-stars from last season include Kevin Crowley, Cody Jamieson, Stephen Keogh, Jordan MacIntosh, Kyle Rubisch and Andrew Suitor.
The contest is set to center around the Griffs Alumni Weekend, which will include the awarding of the MAAC Championship rings to the 2012 title team and the presentation of the team's Ed Van Tine Award, which is given to a supporter of Griffins' lacrosse who has made a significant contribution to the program.
Tickets to the contest are $7 for adults and $5 for children. Fans can purchase tickets by calling 888-2885 or visiting ticketmaster.
The 2013 Griffs return 21 letterwinners from the team that won the program's second MAAC Championship last season.
Nichols School will host the seventh Midwest Prep Classic golf tournament at Diamond Hawk Golf Course in Cheektowaga on Saturday and Sunday, with a shotgun start at 1 p.m. the first day and 8 a.m. the second.
The tournament is open to area high school teams and individual golfers. Local teams, as well as those from Pennsylvania and Ontario, are scheduled to compete. Five-player boys teams (low four scores count) and four-player girls teams (low three scores count Saturday) will determine a team champion.
The event is 36 holes (18 each Saturday and Sunday) for boys and 18 for girls Saturday.
Marie Achkar, a local golf trainer from Leading Edge Performance, will conduct a free warm-up and fitness clinic at noon Saturday for competitors and coaches. In addition, a dinner will be held at the Airport Holiday Inn at 7 p.m. Saturday.

Savannah Sayoc of the Orchard Park Gymsters qualified to the USA Gymnastics TOPs National Team Diamond group. She is one of 44 of the best 7-year olds in the country who qualified through a series of physical ability tests, including rope climb, leg lifts, casting on bars and flexibility. Savannah trains at Gymnastics Unlimited in Orchard Park.
