MALONE (AP) - Construction has begun on a 48-mile, $41 million natural gas pipeline in New York's North Country.

The gas transmission system will run from the Town of Norfolk in St. Lawrence County to the Village of Chateaugay, on the Canadian border in neighboring Franklin County.

Economic development officials say the pipeline will give residents a cheaper energy alternative, help keep jobs in the North Country and attract companies to the region.

State and local elected officials joined business leaders in Malone in Franklin County for last week's ceremonial groundbreaking for the pipeline project.
