A Town of Boston woman escaped with only bumps and bruises when her car was sideswiped by a runaway dump truck after its brakes failed shortly before noon Friday on Boston State Road.
Linda A. Prell, 64, was injured when a truck driven by Gasperino F. Fulfaro, 40, of East Amherst, sideswiped her southbound car near Liebler Road and dragged it some 600 feet. The truck tore through a private yard and a chain-link fence and knocked down a utility pole before coming to a stop adjacent to a fishing pond in the town park.
Prell was treated at Erie County Medical Center after being transported by Boston emergency personnel.
Fulfaro, who was hauling a large utility trailer, traveling west on Liebler Road, lost his brakes going down a steep grade.
To avoid crashing into any of the houses lining both sides of Liebler Road, Fulfaro said he managed to keep his rig speeding into the intersection with Boston State Road where it struck Prell's passenger car, which suffered heavy front-end damage.
State police officials said Prell was lucky she had not entered the intersection any sooner or the runaway rig would likely have T-boned her vehicle and possibly killed her. Fulfaro was shaken up after the crash but was not injured, troopers said.
The State Police Commercial Vehicle Enforcement Unit impounded the dump truck and trailer, which will undergo a complete inspection of its mechanical components.
Charges are expected to be filed after the inspection is completed early next week, officials said.
