MIDDLEPORT - A man suffered head injuries when the car he was driving went off the 2900 block of Carmen Road about 6:30 p.m. today.

His injuries do not appear to be life-threatening, according to the Niagara County Sheriff's Office.

The unidentified man told Niagara County sheriff's deputies that he was driving home from work when he fell asleep at the wheel. Deputies said the man lost control of the vehicle, went off the road and ended up in a wooded area. The force of the impact caused him to be thrown through his vehicle's windshield, deputies said.

"He was conscious and alert at the scene and when deputies arrived he was on his cellphone ," said Capt. Gregory Schuey.

Mercy Flight was called as a precaution and the man was taken to Erie County Medical Center for treatment.
