Cheektowaga police believe that the glare of the sun may have prevented a driver from seeing a red light before he struck a 10-year-old girl walking to her Maryvale school Wednesday morning.
The girl was taken to Women and Children's Hospital with what Cheektowaga police described as non-life-threatening injuries.
"Apparently, her injuries are not serious," Police Capt. James Speyer said.
The girl, believed to be a fifth-grader, was crossing the street on Maryvale Drive, near the entrance to Maryvale Intermediate School, when she was struck, at about 8:05 a.m., by the vehicle that was eastbound on Maryvale.
Cheektowaga police questioned the driver, who stopped after the accident.
"He had a red light, but apparently the glare from the sun prevented him from seeing it," Speyer said.
Police continue to investigate the incident, but no charges have been filed.
