SALAMANCA - A Salamanca Central School science teacher has resigned from his job, eight months after he was arrested for allegedly having inappropriate contact with a student, officials said Wednesday.

The district said Shane C. Riethmiller of Dunkirk officially resigned Tuesday. He had been placed on administrative leave in December as police conducted an investigation into allegations of the misconduct. Investigators said Riethmiller exchanged sexual photos with a student, who was 15 at the time.

In January, Riethmiller was arrested by the Cattaraugus County sheriff's deputies. At that time the School Board also removed him from administrative leave and suspended from teaching eighth graders.

This summer, he was indicted on charges of disseminating indecent material to minors, promoting a sexual performance of a child, endangering the welfare of a child and third-degree sexual abuse.

Superintendent Robert J. Breidenstein said Wednesday that the district is continuing to cooperate with the ongoing investigation.
