LOCKPORT - The Erie Canal Discovery Center is sponsoring its seventh annual Erie Canal Art Contest to celebrate the 187th anniversary of the opening of the Erie Canal in 1825. Deadline for entries is 4 p.m. Oct. 13 at the center, Church and Ontario streets.
The senior high school poster contest is open to any ninth- through 12th-grade student in Niagara County.
Younger students may take part in an Erie Canal coloring contest with three age categories: kindergarten through second grade, grades 3 to 5, and grades 6 to 8.
Entry forms for all age levels are available now at the center or online at www.NiagaraHistory.org.
A public awards ceremony for the winners of the contest is set for 11 a.m. Oct. 27 in the Discovery Center.
Cash awards will be presented for the top three high school entries, and prize packets will be given to three winners in each age bracket for the younger students.
All entries will be on display in the Discovery Center.
The ceremony highlights a day of activities at the center, including a chicken barbecue from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., and a free concert from 11 to 4 titled "Relativity."
The performance will feature several groups with each ensemble being composed of family members.
