LOCKPORT - Niagara County Judge Sara Sheldon Farkas imposed a one-year jail term today on a North Tonawanda woman who has failed to repay nearly $10,000 she stole from her employer five years ago.
Kelly A. Owens, 53, of Oliver Street, a widowed mother of two sons, begged to be placed back on probation, which she had violated by not repaying the $9,876 she owes. She said she is seeking Social Security disability payments which will make it easier for her to pay the money.
"If she can't work, there's no point putting her on probation," said Farkas, who said Owens still will owe the money after her release.
Assistant District Attorney Brian D. Seaman said Owens owed $8,260 to Olstad Corp. of North Tonawanda, where she was a part-time secretary and bookkeeper in 2007, when she wrote checks to herself. She also owes a total of $1,616 to two convenience stores where she cashed the checks, some of which bounced, Seaman said.
"I doubt they'll ever get it," Farkas said, "but they have their pound of flesh."
