The Chautauqua Institution and the villages of Ellicottville, Medina and Wellsville are among nine nominees from New York State for the Prettiest Painted Places in America competition.

The communities will vie with nearly 200 nominees from the country for regional and national honors, as judges with expertise in color selection, exterior painting and home improvement review the entries. Finalists will be announced later this month, and the nation's 12 "prettiest places" will be selected in mid-October.

The competition is sponsored by the Paint Quality Institute, whose mission is to educate the public about quality paints and coatings.
