McDonell nets win for Hawks

Leah McDonell's goal total continues to climb quickly. The Cardinal O'Hara senior forward had four goals in Friday's 5-2 girls soccer win at St. Mary's in the Monsignor Martin Association
McDonell had three goals in the season opener against Niagara Catholic. In the second game she netted a hat trick against Christian Central.
In basketball, McDonell was the South Division's co-Player of the Year. "She's a great athlete and very dedicated to the sports she plays whether it's soccer or basketball," said coach Stephanie Allaire, now in her fourth season. "There's a another Lea [Stachura) on the team and they connect together."

GI volleyball stands tall in win

Cassie Oursler and Alex Brown had 10 kills each as the Grand Island girls volleyball team used its superior height advantage to beat North Tonawanda, 25-21, 25-18, 25-13 - moving to 3-0 in the Niagara Frontier League.
Gabrielle Eppolito had 14 kills as Hamburg beat Clarence in three games.
Julie Law had 13 kills and Sam Shumaker had six aces in Lew-Port's 3-2 win over Kenmore West.

West Seneca hosts cross country

The 18th annual West Seneca Cross Country Invitational welcomes a record field of 45 teams as well as a new site. The athletes representing Section VI, Section V and Canada will run for the first time at Sunshine Park, 1600 East & West Road in West Seneca. Previously the event was run at Fireman's Park in West Seneca.
The first of eight races begins at 10 a.m. The small school varsity girls is at 12:30 p.m. followed by the large school varsity girls at 1 p.m. The small school varsity boys answer the gun at 1 p.m. and the large schools run at 1:30 p.m.

Hat tricks dominate field hockey

Sarah Stando had a hat trick and Heather Tighe added a pair of goals as Hamburg beat East Aurora, 6-0. Taylor Wolf and Claire Buffa combined on the shutout.
Hannah Tilkey had a hat trick while Mary Crumlish and Brooke Atkins combined on a shutout in Williamsville North's 4-0 win over Starpoint.
Meghan Fonfara had a hat trick as Iroquois moved to 3-0 with a 4-1 win over Amherst.
Emily Markarian had two goals and two assists as Orchard Park beat West Seneca East, 4-2.
Lauren Elliott had a goal and an assist as Williamsville East beat Sweet Home, 3-1.
