Betty J. Harling of Williamsville, a longtime bank employee and church deaconess, died Wednesday in Millard Fillmore Suburban Hospital, Amherst. She was 71.
Born in Aberdeen, N.C., she moved to Buffalo in 1961. She married Edward M. Harling in 1964. In 1976 she was employed as a collections specialist at the former Fleet Bank, which later became Bank of America. She retired in 2003.
Mrs. Harling was a member of St. John Baptist Church for more than 15 years. She was a member of the United Mass Choir, and as a deaconess in the church she helped to prepare communion service and baptismal ceremonies. She also visited and prayed with members of the church who were ill and those who were unable to attend church services.
She is survived by her husband and three daughters, Nicole, Sonja and Monica.
A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday in St. John Baptist Church, 184 Goddell St.
