Fifteen days of deaf awareness activities kick off today as four local organizations serving the hearing- impaired launch a program called "DEAFinitely Buffalo."
The celebration will begin at 9:30 a.m. in Barnes & Noble, 1565 Niagara Falls Blvd., Amherst, with the reading of a proclamation designating Deaf Awareness Week, and will be followed by an American Sign Language story hour in the store.
St. Mary's School for the Deaf, Deaf Adult Services, the University at Buffalo ASL Club and the Buffalo Club for the Deaf will offer workshops, a family fun fair, free performances and more through Sept. 29.
Highlights include visits from hearing schools to St. Mary's School for the Deaf on Wednesday; a birthday celebration Thursday for Abbe de L'Eppe, the founder of deaf education in France; and shows by the sign language musical group The Cridders next Friday and Saturday.
