The Friends of Vienna's new season starts Sunday with a concert featuring a melodious trio. John Fullam, the principal clarinetist of the Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra, will be joined by pianist Nancy Townsend and the celebrated teenage soprano Emily Tworek-Helenbrook.
The intriguing afternoon begins with music for clarinet and piano - Two Pieces for Clarinet and Piano, and the Sonata No. 1 in A Flat, Op. 49, both by the iconoclastic late Romantic composer Max Reger. Also included are Four Pieces For Clarinet and Piano, Op. 5 by Alban Berg.
Helenbrook will be heard in Three Vocalises for Soprano Voice and B Flat Clarinet by Ralph Vaughan Williams and in Schubert's "The Shepherd on the Rock," a classic for soprano, piano and clarinet and a natural for a concert like this.
The concert takes place at 3:30 p.m. Sunday in Unity Church of Buffalo (1234 Delaware Ave.). Tickets, available at the door, are $10 general, $6 students and $1 child under 12. There is also a start-of-the-season special: For $40, you may buy a season ticket, which admits you to all six concerts.
