Sen. Timothy Kennedy has a 91-vote lead over his Democratic primary challenger, Erie County Legislature Chairwoman Betty Jean Grant, and nearly 1,200 ballots still need to be counted.
The Erie County Board of Elections compiled the vote totals stored on each machine's memory stick Friday afternoon, which narrowed the margin between the candidates.
Based on reports from election inspectors in each polling place, Kennedy's lead last night was 271 votes.
The board will begin counting absentee and affidavit ballots Sept. 21.
So far, 1,188 absentee and military ballots have been returned, but they can arrive at the board until Thursday.
