A flag for excessive celebration is a call Burgard can live with when it comes after winning a game on a Hail Mary.
Wide receiver Sean Marshall caught the 31-yard pass from Dequan Walker on the last play of the game as the Bulldogs pulled out a 16-12 win over Springville in a Class B game played on Saturday at All High Stadium.
"I'll accept those [penalties] anytime, especially winning in that dramatic fashion," said Burgard coach Jason Kolb.
The Bulldogs' bench rushed the field moments after Marshall's catch in which he jumped over three defenders to make the play in the corner of the end zone. "He made a great athletic play," added Kolb.
Marshall finished with seven catches for 117 yards. Jamar Holmes had 102 yards in receptions, 17 tackles, a fumble recovery and scored a TD. DE Roderick Morrow had a blocked punt, 15 tackles and a fumble recovery.
Sweet Home 28, Kenmore West 6: Mike Torrillo was 10 of 14 passing for 235 yards and a pair of TDs as the Panthers amassed 254 yards of offense in a win. Torrillo found Mike McCoy and Carter Mann on TD throws and Michael McCoy added a 26-yard run as the Panthers jumped to a 21-0 halftime lead.
Wmsv. North 20, North Tonawanda 14: Sophomore safety Zac Kelly intercepted a pass with 47 seconds left as the Spartans held on. QB Ryan Majewski threw for 219 yards and had TDs to Tyler Green and Kolbe Hughes. Derick Isler ran for 137 yards with a TD and had an interception.
Williamsville South 42, Bennett 14: QB Trent Ferguson and WR Chaq Nettles connected for three TDs as the Billies opened a 21-0 lead after one quarter. Ferguson totaled four TDs and 270 yards while Nettles had 161 yards in receptions.
"Trent's starting to play real well, trying to get Chaq the ball," said coach Kraig Kurzanski. "It took a couple games and now they're in sync, they know each other's tendencies, it's been better."
Sam Cohen had eight tackles, a fumble recovery and a caused fumble. Casey Nurtrano added six tackles.
West Seneca East 35, South Park 18: Scott Ackerman had four TDs, including the first three scores of the game, as the Trojans moved to 3-0. QB Andy Smigiera threw for 94 yards and rushed for 70. Ryan Johnson recorded 10 tackles. South Park QB Maurice Howie kept his team in the game, going 24 of 36 for 236 yards and three TDs.
Williamsville East 14, Iroquois 7: Matt Schulenberg scored on a 7-yard run with 2:30 left to win it for the Flames. On the play before. East linebacker Ryan Wayne pressured the Iroquois quarterback into interception by Cort Williams, who returned the ball to the 7. It was one of three East interceptions. Wayne finished with eight tackles. QB Alex Debernardo was 15 of 23 for 161 yards.
Lockport 38, Hutch-Tech 8: James Chambers found the end zone four times as the Lions broke the game open with a 21-point second quarter in a Class AA North win. QB Dan Bronson was 14 of 19 for 200 yards and three TDs. Moziah Townsend had 10.5 tackles and Will Diebel added 8.5.
St. Mary's 40, O'Hara 18: With the Hawks' defense keying on Lancer standout RB Nick Vallone, FB Bryan O'Neill had a career game. He scored TDs on three of his six carries finishing with 180 yards.
After Vallone was thrown for a loss on his first carry of the game, the Lancers gave the ball on the next play to O'Neill, who took it 85 yards for a score, following a key block by Vallone. LB Robert Desiderio recorded 24 tackles and linebacker Alex Horvaris added 13 and was 4 of 5 in PATs. For the second week in a row Vallone returned a kickoff for a score, this one an 84-yarder. Anthony Stitt followed suit later with a 65-yard kickoff return. For the Hawks, Anthony DiFrancesco ran 32 times for 152 yards and Khari Wright had 12 unassisted tackles.
Grand Island 31, Starpoint 14: Quinn Corrao was 9 of 18 passing for 124 yards and two scores as the Vikings put together a 17-point second quarter. Danny Blocho rushed for 94 yards.
Aquinas 35, Bishop Timon-St. Jude 7: Derek Simpson threw a TD pass and Jackson Browne had 15 tackles for the Tigers.
Kenmore East 21, Niagara-Wheatfield 0: Preston Smith rushed for 101 yards while Connor McMahon was 6 of 7 passing for 139 yards and two TDs for the Bulldogs.
Silver Creek 22, I-Prep/Grover 7: Tyler Bain caught TD passes of 69 and 35 yards and Sherman Williams added an 11-yard TD run for the Black Knights. QB Nick Iskra was 6 of 11 for 124 yards and a TD. William Burgess of I-Prep led all rushers with 147 yards.
Panama 40, Forestville 15: Rob Benson rushed for a school record 240 yards on 17 carries, breaking the mark of 231 set by Tom Pratton in 2001. Benson scored on runs of 95 and 35 yards.
JFK 33, University Prep 6: QB Nick Anderson rushed for 102 yards and had a rushing and passing TD for the Bears. Zack Walkowski added 101 all-purpose yards, scored twice and had six tackles.
